Switzerland has over 200 different types of bread. I wrote about dozens of these breads in my book, Swiss Bread. Published in 2020 by Helvetiq and translated into German and French, this book includes over 40 recipes and the stories behind these traditional breads. However, knowing that there are hundreds more out there, I created this online directory to try and identify and catalog them all!
Purpose
I created this inventory of Swiss breads because, first and foremost, I thought it would be fun. I love learning about Swiss food, and I really enjoy making lists. So, while this is a personal project, I am sharing it with others to the extent it might help:
- Promote Switzerland’s culinary heritage.
- Support Swiss artisanal bakeries that make these special breads.
- Encourage people to travel and discover Switzerland’s varied regional destinations.
Finally, for home bakers, I want to inspire them with breads from Switzerland that may not have otherwise known about.

Criteria
To help organize this growing list of Swiss breads, here are my criteria for inclusion. A “Swiss bread” for the purposes of this directory must meet the following conditions:
- A leavened dough (yeast or sourdough) made with flour that is baked.
- A history of being made in Switzerland, professionally or by home bakers, for at least five years.
- A strong connection with Switzerland, such as a particular location, a cultural tradition, and/or a unique name.
